Alabar Farm’s Majestic Son was fittingly awarded the gavelhouse.com Trotting Stallion Of The Year for the second year running at Saturday night’s Harness Racing New Zealand Awards.

Represented by two lots in the inaugural gavelhouse.com Standardbred online auction in July, the Majestic Son two-year-olds were the two highest priced horses to sell with his filly Maggie May topping the sale at $16,000.

Majestic Son’s progeny have had a wonderful season to see him finish as the Leading Money Earning Sire of Trotters on both sides of the Tasman with his Australian progeny earning almost A$2million, an incredible million dollars ahead of his nearest rival. In Australia they were headlined by a rich crop of three-year-olds including Majestuoso, Royal Charlotte and the Kiwi, Kratos.

While 2018-19 was incredible, Majestic Son’s progeny have hit the ground running this season with standouts already showing up as the early favourites for the first big dance, the Dominion Handicap on Show Day at Addington. Sundees Sun for the Dunns and Oscar Bonavena for the Allstars are all the rage in early season contentions. While last season’s Anzac and Rowe Cup’s placed Majestic Man is yet to step out this season.

At the same event, Sundees Sun capped 2018-19 for his Alabar Stud sire by unanimously taking out the overall New Zealand Trotter Of The Year Award.

Tardina Stud’s two-year-old daughter of Majestic Son in Maggie May (pictured) topped the inaugural gavelhouse.com Standardbred online auction on Wednesday night, fetching $16,000.

Tony Parker was more than happy with the result and can see where the new way of trading will fit into their already successful breeding and racing operation “We entered two two-year-olds and three broodmares and it was a great experience,”

“Four out of the five sold and it’s handy to be able to move horses on relatively seamlessly on a monthly basis.”

With vendors able to set the reserve and starting prices of their Lots, Parker opted to use the minimum starting bid of $200 and then had relatively low reserves of $500 on most of their horses, a ploy that garnered plenty of early interest in enquiries and bidding.

gavelhouse.com has launched their inaugural online Standardbred auction catalogue comprising 23 Lots with bidding set to close starting with Lot 1 at 7pm on Wednesday 24 July.

The catalogue features weanlings, yearlings, two-year-olds, racehorses and broodmares both empty and in-foal.

Of the in-foal mares the covering sires include Buy Kiwi Made, Creatine, Downbytheseaside, He’s Watching, Gold Ace, Sweet Lou and Vincent with some of the highlights in the sale including:

• Lot 4 – Dothraki. A weanling colt by Champion French sire Love You from the great race mare Pocaro (1.57.5). Dothraki is a half-brother to three winners including Group 1 winner Missandei and from the same family as Springbank Sam, Sun Of Anarchy and Daenerys Targaryen.
• Lot 7 – Errani. Out of a half-sister to Group 1 Tasmanian Derby winner I’m Mark Anthony, Errani herself a half-sister to two Australian winners in Machitelli and Ranieri. This is also the family of Three-year-old Pacer of the Year Roman Gladiator. This filly has been broken in and is currently spelling.
• Lot 8 – Maggie May. A full sister to 2013-14 Trotting Filly of the Year and Group 2 winner Wanna Play, Maggie May is from the Group 1 placed and Group 3 winning mare Miss Whiplash. Broken in and currently spelling.
• Lot 13 – Cullen’s Creation. A daughter of Christian Cullen from Adios Dream who was a multiple Group 2 winner, Cullen’s Creation is offered for sale in foal to Sweet Lou. Cullen’s Creation is the dam of five to race, all of which are winners in 2.00 including the Group 1 placed Quite A Delight.
• Lot 20 – Sportzilluztrated. A racing or breeding proposition, Sportzilluztrated is a daughter of the American bred mare Saddle Ridge and is a half-sister to multiple Group 2 West Australian winner The Bucket List. She is also a full-sister to Group 2 placed Somethingaboutmary.

The much-anticipated virtual ‘open for business sign’ is officially up on gavelhouse.com’s new Standardbred online auction platform with entries for the first monthly auction now being taken.

There are two steps for new users to enter horses including registering their user account and then following the simple, self-service process to enter each horse. Entries for the inaugural auction are due online by 7pm on Wednesday 17 July.

The catalogue will be launched at 5pm on Thursday 18 July with the auction running through until 7pm Wednesday 24 July and future auction dates available here

A standard entry fee is $125 + GST while you can increase your listing’s exposure by choosing a featured listing for $200 + GST with this ensuring your horse’s inclusion in an email newsletter to the comprehensive industry database plus sponsored social media posts.

Each listing may have up to five photos plus video footage and in a major coup for the Standardbred industry, Arion pedigrees and race results will automatically pull through to gavelhouse.com listings.

Online bloodstock trading is becoming increasingly popular as a timely and cost-effective means of selling.

Buyers have the convenience of regular trading opportunities and vendors have a cost-effective selling option to move bloodstock on.

Buyers and sellers alike are embracing the concept and with gavelhouse.com’s rapid growth in the thoroughbred sphere seeing its expansion into standardbreds in July 2019.

As always there is a risk in buying bloodstock whether you’re bidding ringside at traditional sales or from an online space behind your computer screen. So what can you do to mitigate the risk?

Do your due diligence, and do your homework. gavelhouse.com Standardbred catalogues will be online for six days before bidding closes and vendor contact information is available on each listing page. We encourage prospective buyers to make contact with the vendors and do their research before placing a bid.

Finding out more information and inspecting the horse in person will ensure you know what you are really buying and can help you make a decision on your budget.

• If you can’t make it yourself to inspect the horse, get someone whose judgement you trust to inspect it for you.
• Ask the farm for more photos and a video of the horse if you feel what they have provided isn’t sufficient for you to feel comfortable bidding on the horse.
• Contact people who will have dealt with the horse whether it be a former trainer, the breaker, or even someone who has worked with it in the stable or driven it.

As a vendor it is in your best interest to represent the horse you are selling fairly and honestly. Be upfront about any health or soundness issues, and where possible supply pregnancy certificates for in foal mares and breeding certificates for maiden mares. If you would like to cut down on enquiries make sure you provide a detailed description, quality photos, and video footage of your horse from the outset.
